This morning as I sat comfortably at my desk I began to reapply my mint flavored Chap Stick. I usually scan The New York Times and try my hardest to click on a topic other than politics. This morning I found an article in the World section of particular interest entitled “In Poverty and Strife, Women Test Limits.”

A comic about life in 20th century Iran? No really! Marjane Satrapi retells the story of her life growing up in Iran first under British puppet Shah and then later Ayahtolla Komeini in her illustrated novel, Persepolis. The strength of Satrapi’s work is in her ability convey the politics and massive social change in 20th century Iran with humanity and, importantly, from a woman's perspective. Her graphic novel has recently been made into a film, Persepolis.

"On March 8, 1857, thousands of working women marched through the streets of New York City demanding an end to sweat-shop conditions, improved childcare facilities, equal pay for equal work, and the right to vote. In 1910 at the International Conference of Women Socialists, Clara Zetkins proposed that March 8th be observed as International Working Women’s Day in honor of the New York March.
